Memoir: A Collection of Silk Kuppadam Saris

MEMOIR : A collection of silk saris inspired from Muggu designs
Memoir is a collection of lightweight silk saris for the young women for occasions such as formal parties and festive gatherings. The combination of the famed silk kuppadam saris along with subtler designs provide the perfect balance for occasions where one wants to put a fresh spin to the conventionally heavy silk saris.

Muggulu is one of the types of floor patterns made outside houses in the south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The design process started with studying the muggu form and the stories of cultural importance associated with them.
The user persona for the collection was created according to the one made for the brand.
The keywords from the inspiration board were joined with other from the user study to form the base for the moodboard. Culture, tradition and feminine grace gave way to more words like rustic beauty, welcoming and serenity. The final moodboard contains visuals that I noticed around the South Indian household, and in particular, Chirala.
The lookboard for the collection is put together using visual cues from the moodboard, along with current trends in the market. There is rise in color blocking apparel and minimal look with subtle details. The same were used for this collection that would cater to women’s need for semi formal and occasional traditional wear.
The colors for the collection are inspired by the hues from the spices of South India. Just like the culture of the region, the colors seen are deeply rooted to nature. The palette falls right in the sub-section between the south Indian and western color palette making it appropriate for the customer base.

The visual cues from the inspiration board led me to
the keywords :
• Symmetry
• Lines and Dots
• Figure and Ground
• Intricacy
• Geometry

The keywords led me to explore the forms on orthographic and isometric grids, while also simplifying the curves.

Several groups of designs were grouped together. Each group consisted of different options for motifs for the body and the pallu. The elements from the same groups were then taken forward and composed together in the layout of the sari.
